My Precious Garden

My husband and I love to work in the yard, but I especially enjoy it. I simply love it, work or no work, I don’t mind it at all.
The backyard in our home is vast with numerous trees of pine and oak. They are the best looking trees I ever saw. Yet, we are cleaning the place all the time. In the few recent years, numerous storms have passed by our area and as a consequence, left many debris in our yard. It made cleaning quite challenging. Lucky for us, we had tools to help us in the cleaning – all the raking, cutting, pulling, sweeping and clearing or else doing it all by hand would have left our fingers numb and broken our aging backs! You can say that the weed eater, leaf blower and the chain saw are the most overworked tools that we have. Lately, there were a number of trees in our yard that came down after the storms had passed. The trees were ruined, it made two out of one, leaving the trunk behind. Totem poles were made out of the trunks of the trees that were downed by the storm. My husband did that with the use of a chain saw.
Many years back when my mom and dad moved into this house, my mom placed a Wisteria vine in our backyard. I inherited the house after my mom and dad died. Everything here is special. For me, the house and the yard have a sentimental value. When I took over the house, however, what I saw was a big mess that accumulated for more than forty years of time and neglect.
The whole yard was engulfed with leaves, pine straws and wisteria. The leaf blower works great for the leaves, and the weed eater takes care of everything else. With wisteria, nevertheless, is quite difficult. To remove all the withering and damaged vines, the roots must be included and you may find it for yourself if ever you have one at your yard, how taxing it can be. As a purist, I do not advocate the use of poison. I want everything to stay as natural as it can be. Our yard is habitually visited by birds and animals, in search for their consumption and nutrition. They also have to be well fed.
The situation with our yard today calls for an instant makeover but considering it’s the peak of summer, with the heat soaring high, my husband and I do try to practice safety means to avoid unnecessary accidents. The sweltering heat and moist atmosphere in our area which can be unbearable at times is very common during the summers. Therefore, staying indoors is more comforting. I hate the August months. During these times, it’s rare that I am out in the open for too long because the heat can be excruciating.
Annually, approximately 400 people die due to heat stroke. Staying outdoors during summer can dry you up, one thing you can do is make sure to bring something to rehydrate yourself. Lots of clean potable water is important to keep you hydrated at all times. Try to avoid going out during the hottest hours of the day, every now and then take some time out, put on clothes that are not heavy on the body, if possible the loose ones. Also, wear something that is light in color, because dark colors absorb heat. If you have a hat, put it on as well and choose the one where air can freely pass. You cannot separate from me my bottle of water, my hat, my sunglasses and my diluted peppermint spray whenever I am out in the yard working. They always stick with me. In the wee hours of the morning and late afternoons is the time that I usually work in the garden. I am also aware that I have my limitations, so I know when I have to finish up and take a break.
With Autumn fast approaching, we’ll have to do our work once more. Our chainsaw, weed eater and leaf blower will be of much use again. Although it’s alright with me because I love the Autumn season and I will forever have no excuse not to be in my precious garden!
